Mind Your Bloody Language: The Subtle Art of Self-Talk

Updated: Nov 1

Ever catch yourself mindlessly muttering something like, ‘I never get this right’ or ‘I’m just not that kind of person’? Well, here’s the thing… we don’t always realise it, but those words? They’re like silent, diligent little architects, working non-stop building our beliefs and shaping our reality in the background.

Language isn’t just the words we say; it’s how we set up our own world. Our words are the foundation of our thoughts, which fuel our beliefs and feelings, which eventually become the life we’re living. And whether we know it or not, every ‘I can’t’ or ‘I’m shit at…’ is another solid brick in the walls we build around ourselves (believe me, I’ve built myself quite the bloody forte at times).

Imagine the difference between saying, ‘I’m struggling’ vs ‘I’m learning.’ One locks us in place, the other cracks the door open for possibility. Same with ‘I’m not good enough’ vs ‘I’m working on it.’ One shuts us down, the other invites growth. It can seem too subtle to matter, but those little shifts? They add up to serious power over our self-created world.

Our language becomes our reality. So, what are YOU saying to (and about) yourself? What stories are you telling that are holding you back? And what could happen if you started the powerful practice of flipping the script as of today? Maybe next time you catch yourself in that loop of ‘I can’t,’ try ‘I’m finding my way’ or ‘I’m building this skill.’

It might feel weird and a bit clunky at first, but that’s how change happens - tiny shifts that rewire how we see ourselves and feel about our circumstances, one word at a time.

So, here’s my challenge to you, legend: listen to yourself today. What words are shaping your world and how to those words make you feel? If they’re not helping you, change them. Because that power – to shape your story, your beliefs, and your reality – it’s right there. All you have to do is pay attention, evaluate the reframes, and watch what unfolds!
